Info

This Trad Folk Music Workshop is a weekend filled with tuition for musicians with a variety of  backgrounds and instruments. The classes are concerned with traditional music primarily from Ireland and Scotland, but also from Austria and other European cultures.

The workshops begin on Friday morning and end on Sunday evening. There will be two blocks of three-hour classes every day, the morning class starting at 10 am, the evening class at 3 pm. The morning classes are for specific instruments. Musicians with instruments that are not included, can join the ensemble classes in the afternoon, which are open for a variety of instruments, at a reduced fee.

Fiddlers will be divided into two groups according to their level and will then be taught in turn by both tutors during the morning classes. There will be a variety of ensemble classes to chose from in the afternoon. The general level of students is moderately advanced to advanced. If you are a beginner and are unsure if you will fit in, please contact us and we can talk in detail about it.

The Uilleann Pipers  will also be split into two groups according to their levels. This will allow for a more specific teaching approach. Each group will in turn be taught by both teachers. Therefore, beginners and advanced players can both benefit equally from the local and guest tutors. Please note that basic command of the instrument is a requirement. If you are a total beginner, please contact us in advance and we can discuss how you can benefit from the workshop. The uilleann pipes workshop is a full-time course, which means that participants won’t be able to chose additional afternoon classes. There will be no reed making class this year.

This year we will not have communal meals as all the apartments and rooms in the Castle are equipped with self-catering kitchens. Weather permitting, we will organise a barbecue for all  workshop participants, friends, family and guests. We would like to ask you for a 10,- contribution per person, and please let us know in advance, so we can plan ahead (registration form). Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be available at reasonable prices. All this profit goes towards the workshops, so you are helping the event by not bringing your own.

Accommodation:

A variety of rooms and apartments are available in the medieval castle Lockenhaus. All guests and participants of our event will receive a reduced rate. Please book rooms as soon as possible as the hotel sells out quickly.

Each room is equipped with a small self-catering kitchen. Half board, full board or breakfast only is available from the castle tavern restaurant at a surcharge.  The restaurant also offers a lá carte menu.
